Suicides and Mental Breakdowns in UBF
17th-Jan-2006 04:16 am
This is a reposting of a private discussion thread with some confidential information removed for public view which shows the psychological effects of involvement in UBF. (see comments) See also article on Pyschological Consequences of Cultic Involvement:

"I have noticed there have been a number of suicides over the years in UBF. I just recently looked at Joe's Blog and read about a 2nd gen who committed suicide and the horrible way in which Sam Lee addressed it in a message, which is shamefully typical. The stories about Sarah Regina floating around in UBF were/are not any better. What troubled me even more was the lies, cover-ups and denials of the truth...

Are there any statistics of the number of suicides or attempted suicides in UBF? I think there may be more that we do not even know about." (See results below)

Suicides:
Korea: 1
USA: 6; plus 1 attempted and 4 severely depressed/suicidal
Germany: 4, plus 1 attempted

Nervous Breakdowns: estimated hundreds

As far as I know, there has been one suicide in Korea (the one you mentioned) and four in the USA. The four in the USA are Sarah Regina Thompson, Samuel Choi Jr., Shim Jin Soon (mentioned here), and a "sheep" in Chicago UBF in the late 80s/early 90s.

Joe, I read the related material in your 7/29 blogpost. I am so sorry about your brother-in-law, Samuel Choi. I do not have words to express.

I have to say that, but for the grace and faithfulness of God, I would not be here today. A family member of mine, who is also Christian, became very concerned for me and took me to the hospital.

Unfortunately, there were other cases of suicide and attempted suicide in UBF. In a comment on the discussion thread on Samuel Choi, Chris mentioned several suicides in Germany: "http://rsqubf.fortunecity.net/discuss/archive/4124.html"

"Speaking of consistent testimonies: In Heidelberg UBF there have been 4 cases of suicides of UBF Heidelberg members, and one attempt. One of the members was already ordained a "shepherd" by Kaleb Hong. But Kaleb did not even attend his funeral. I was there at the funeral. Instead, he told the congregation that God had "cleansed" our church..."

Hi,

There were at least two other sheep that committed suicide in Chicago in the early 1990's that I know of. Neither of the victims were ever mentioned again. Also, there were a number of 'sheep' who suffered debilitating nervous breakdowns. One recently fell apart this spring after being told to get off her medications 'by faith.'

There are rumors of ubf leaders preparing to marry off these people who are not fit to get married. The problem is not the sheep, it is the ubf that has a medieval view of mental health issues. (Besides having wrong views of the Bible, God, and people)

There is also the case of Jim Pappas, a ten year sheep of Mark Vucekovich, who was in and out of mental hospitals. He killed his mother and was found not fit to stand trail, I believe the year was 1997. There are rumors that VC had attempted to arrange a marriage for this dangerous person.

Hi Nick,

... I think there are more unknown cases in UBF worldwide. I would not doubt more cases in Korea. I think this should be investigated. One thing I don't want to happen is for those who have lost their life because of the abusive system in UBF to have lost their lives in vain and their memory to be forgotten. There were no actual suicides in my chapter, but there were 5 cases of severe depression/suicidal, requiring hospitalization; one of which actually attempted suicide.

I have said it before and it is worth repeating, I am very thankful for the information, resources and support from former members on this website. I have not only received help but have been able to help others.

Hi Sis,

Because of the abuse we suffered in ubf, we are all thankful to have the friendship and support of each other here. I am glad to hear from you and yours.

As a sad addendum to Mr. Pappas, he had been in and out of mental health facilities constantly, the newspaper that followed the murder mnetioned NINETEEN times. Mr. Pappas killed his elderly mother by stabbing her like 50 plus times. He then waited another day until he called his uncle and told him that he killed his mother. The ubf is never mentioned in any of the articles, and the ubf never mentioned this crime and tragedy even tho Mr. Pappas was attending the all ubf events faithfully up to the day of the murder.

No information can be found about the murder on the internet or public records. Only the newspaper articles in the local weekly paper of Morton Grove IL document this tragedy.

I think the number of people who fall into this category "who suffered debilitating nervous breakdowns" must be in the hundreds. During my 5 years at a small chapter, this happened several times (including myself).

Who is Sarah Regina Thompson, and what is her story? Just after I read this E-mail, I Googled her name and came up with zero results. I wish there was some search engine that covered the whole RSQUBF site. Can anyone enlighten me?

See link to RSQUBF discussion thread for eyewitness account of her suicide death and also read the whole discussion thread. It is very sad and very important that her story be told. Thanks for asking.

"I wish there was some search engine that covered the whole RSQUBF site."

In google, you can search the rsqubf site like this

"spiritual order" site:rsqubf.fortunecity.net

This searches rsqubf.fortunecity.net for "spiritual order". Similarly, to search the old rsqubf forum, it's

"spiritual order" site:voy.com/60734/

But the results of the search may not be satisfactory.

God's Faithfulness Endures Forever

"..but for the grace and faithfulness of God, I would not be here today."

I want to expand on this point. Because of God's grace to me when he first saved me (one year prior to coming to UBF), He was faithful to his promise to never leave me or forsake me. Jesus said "I will not lose any whom the Father has given me. No one can snatch them out of my hand" and also "Nothing can separate us from the love of God." Despite what I had been through in UBF and how it affected my faith, He did not leave me. Even despair and unbelief did not separate me from Him. He restored me and reminded me of the Scripture He had given me when He first saved me and filled me with His Spirit, Phil. 1:6 "Being confident of this, He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus."
