It's easy to "serve" when you're getting praise

I find it curious that in our testimonies, we were never able to mention the work of others in our lives unless they were UBF members. Continued in comments...

One former member, for instance, writes about her testimony:

“I wrote about how influential reading the Christian theology and arguments of C. S. Lewis was to my faith. I was supposed to read it aloud at a conference of a couple hundred people and turn in a draft beforehand. After turning it in, I didn't hear anything back until 20 minutes before I was supposed to present it. Then, they gave me my ‘revised’ version that condensed everything I had written about Lewis to just one sentence: ‘Although I looked at other sources, it was ultimately the Bible that led me to a personal relationship with God.’”

I also remember that when my husband wrote his testimony, he was told to take out all references to his ex-girlfriend that he had included, though the relationship had driven him closer to God. I also understood that I was not to speak about my boyfriend in my testimonies, though God had used him to encourage me to read my Bible.

Funny then, that the overwhelming trend in UBF testimonies is to spend plenty of time talking up the work of one’s “shepherd” or fellow UBF members. Here is a recent excerpt from a testimony on the UBF website, in which the writer devotes a full paragraph (and most of the rest of his testimony) to praising UBF members:

“As a growing disciple, I was trained in various ways through message delivery, drama performances, testimony sharing and serving CBF. I also received a great deal of training from Little Sarah as her administrative assistant. She honed my strengths of diligence and work ethic and worked on my weaknesses of selfishness, distrust and heartlessness. I will always be indebted to her for her labor of love. I have been in the fellowship since John Bird was the fellowship leader, even before Dr. Charles came as a member. I have seen so much growth and change over the last 6 years. Under his leadership, our fellowship has seen many young people come in, grow as spiritual leaders and then go out to serve God in various mission fields. Charles is a man of principal and integrity. Dr. Charles has been a good role model for me as godly servant leader.”

How did he learn to glorify UBF members like this? Because it’s the norm in UBF testimonies. Anyone who doubts this should simply spend a little time reading UBF testimonies online.

It should be clear that to be a shepherd in UBF is not simply a thankless job of servanthood. It will get you human glorification.

I see that the program of bondage to people, one's "shepherds," is still an on-going program in UBF. I also see that the Lee family still has a place of prominence in UBF and are required to be regularly praised. I didn't know Little Sarah needed an "administrative assistant." Maybe she's still collecting the rent on UBF properties.

From reading the rest of it, it sounds like it was written by Joe G. If I recall correctly, he was maneuvered by Little Sarah into an arranged marriage in Korea (a specialty of Little Sarah's). If I also recall correctly, the marriage was very short-lived. Funny how that's not mentioned in the praiseology.

Wasn't Little Sarah also involved in the scandal of extra-marital affair? There are also many scandalous accusations against the son of Paul Younggi Cho, the senior pastor of the largest church in the world, located in Seoul Korea.

He has history of extra-marital affair. He also has history of misusing his father's church money. Mr. Ku and Mr. Ryu, appeared in this article, also claim that pastor Cho and all his family should resign from the posts they hold in the church if they really want to help Korean Christianity. They say that pastor Cho and his family are the biggest stumbling block to Korean Christianity.

If UBF wants to repent, the Lee family should resign from all their direct/indirect involvement in UBF affairs. Until this is done, UBF will keep on walking in its past evil path to degrade a precious soul to a UBF soul and glorif Samuel Lee and the Lee family. The Lee family owes it to all current UBF members and former members. No one owes anything to the Lee family.

Especially Little Sarah should have nothing to do with marriage. She is not qualified. Her only qualification is that she is a daughter of Samuel Lee, which is not any qualification at all. I had several occasion to talk to her very briefly. She tried to put on some kind of mysterious aura. But when I heard things come out of her mouth, I felt disgusted at her shallowness. I never wanted to talk to her or see her ever again.

I think that sentence summaries very well the goal that UBF leaders want to reach, and shows how good they reached it in this case. They want the members to be for ever indebted to them and the organization, because they "loved them so much" and "bore with them". Peter Chang in Bonn is an extreme example. Though (or because?) he spritiually abuses people most extremely, they believe his is their real father, he loved them so much, and they owe him everything. Then these people give everything, their money, labor and time, to the leader. These leaders invest a little bit "love" (i.e. skillful manipulation), and then they demand "now you owe me". Nick once wrote about this "now you owe me" mentality of the UBF leaders.

As discussed in other post, the ultimate goal of UBF is to convert a precisou soul into a UBF soul. That is why UBF leaders discredit other sources but the Bible. Well there seems to be nothing wrong with helping anyone regard the Bible as the ultimate source in building up personal relationship with God. In fact it must be encouraged in any good Christian evironment.

What we have to consider at this point is this. When a UBF leader encourages sheep to regard the Bible as the ultimate source, does he mean the Bible itself or does he mean UBF-style bible study based on UBF theology? When we consider everything practiced in UBF and all messages preached in UBF, we cannot but conclude that the Bible study in UBF is nothing but promoting as ultimate source UBF-style bible study based on UBF theology that was developed by Samuel Lee one person.

If any good Christian leader believes that the Bible itself is the ultimate source, he/she would encourage sheep to use not only his/her bible study but also any good and noble references to build personal relationship with God. The good Christian leader will do so because he/she is more interested in making the sheep followers of Jesus rather than in making the sheep committed members of his/her own church.

UBF teaches that ultimately UBF one to one Bible study and Samuel Lee's theology are the only source to build personal relationship with God. Even though UBF agrees that there are other good sources and other people who can help sheep, ultimately UBF will cut off everything other than UBF from sheep's life to convert the sheep to a UBF soul. The sheep will breathe in UBF and breathe out UBF. The sheep will obey UBF absolutely. He can never leave UBF. That is the ultimate goal of Samuel Lee's theology.

Why does UBF make sheep share in public testimonies revised by UBF leaders? When you share your testimony in public, you seem to be more bound by it than the testimony you share in private. In case you leave UBF, UBF leaders can use the testimony to paint you as a betrayer of Jesus and people will buy that since they heard your testimony even though they do not know that your testimony had been revised many times by UBF leaders. So once you are involved in UBF activity and leave, you are a bad person damned by God. Once you are in UBF, you either must become a UBF soul or become a damned person.

I find it curious that in our testimonies, we were never able to mention the work of others in our lives unless they were UBF members.

A typical example I will never forget is the first public testimony by a young man who was "my sheep" at that time. He wrote a candid and thoughtful testimony in which he spoke out his respect of the deaconesses in the hospital where he was working at that time, and how he learned from their faith and labor. Before he was allowed to share his testimony, our chapter leader Kaleb Hong called him into his room at the conference place (he always reserved his own room there for such purposes) where he told him to share the testimony first in front of him only. Then Kaleb told him to remove the passage about the deaconesses, and to stress UBF and Bible study instead. One or two years later, that young man left UBF. I was very sad at that time, but now I know it was good. One of the reasons he told me was this event which he remembered very well. He said he did not leave because of me, but because of Kaleb and because he felt UBF was manipulating him and he couldn't trust the leadership. Today he is working very succesfully as a medical doctor abroad. I'm so happy he saw the warning signs. I needed much longer than him to recognize he was right in his judgement about UBF.

UBF leaders do not remove non-biblical elements but non-UBF elements from testimonies when they revise them. They remove all non-UBF stuff and fill in all UBF stuff instead. And they let their sheep share their testimonies in public. I would call this brainwashing and the ultimate result is "non-UBF=non-biblical". Writing testimony and sharing revised testimony in public are essential trainings in UBF to make anyone remain committed to UBF under the control of UBF leaders.

I also wanted to call attention to the last paragraph of Joe Grady's testimony:

"God has now given me a clear mission to be a father for UIC students. You can call me Father Joe. I am unworthy, but God is a God of great hope. Please pray for me to be a good servant and shepherd."

This notion that UBF "shepherds" are fathers to their "sheep" is a very damaging teaching that allows UBFers to usurp the place of the true parents of the "sheep" and the place of God as the only true spiritual Father in the life of a Christian.
