UBF Bible twist example
6th-Jan-2007 07:15 pm
Today I came across the following verse in the Bible:

1 John 2:27: "As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit- just as it has taught you, remain in him."

I wondered how UBF would interpret that verse since it obviously contradicts their whole teaching (and generally that of shepherding/discipling/G12 etc. movements) that all believers need some "superior" Christian (the "shepherd" or "discipler") to lead and teach them. Jesus Himself said something similar ("Nor are you to be called 'teacher', for you have one Teacher, the Christ.") and there other passages about that but for now I only want to look at 1 John 2:27.

It was a bit difficult to find a UBF 1 John 2 message since you know UBF has its favorite Bible books that are always preached while others are more or less neglected. Finally I found a UBF message on 1 John 2 (included here). Of course, it did not come surprising that verse 27 was not the keyverse and not used for the title. UBF often claims their passage based Bible study is "objective" but they start already bringing a subjective focus to a passage by deliberately choosing a certain verse as key verse and a certain title. You know how important they take the title - they speak it loudly at the beginning of a message and stick it in big letters on the wall. Could you imagine anybody in UBF choosing verse 27 as the title: "YOU DO NOT NEED ANYONE TO TEACH YOU"?

Now let's see how they interpret the verse in the message. Quote:

"In verses 26-27, St. John urges prayerfully that they must remember that they are anointed ones."

That's all UBF has to say about 1 John 2,26-27. One meager sentence that only repeats the content, and only a small selected part of it. No word and no explanation of "you do not need anyone to teach you". How much do they talk about other verses like "feed my lamb" - they make whole conferences with that one verse. But this one they just ignore. Just elegantly hop over the Bible passages that are contradicting UBF teaching. Nobody will have noticed anyway, since that was already the end of the sermon and everybody was already asleep.

Hey, hello! If any UBFer is reading this: Wake up from your sleep. Read the Bible yourself and think about it. UBF pretends taking the Bible seriously, but they don't. Don't let anybody fool you.

the *other* problem is that their teaching and practice is contrary to the Bible.

You are right. UBF clearly has theological issues. But the leaders enforce their false theology on their sheep by abusing their authority. For exmaple, Becky testified the following in her life testimony:

“하지만, 모두들 그와 결혼하라고 압력을 넣고, 그렇지 않으면 하나님께 불순종하는 것이란 느낌을 심어왔습니다 (But everyone around me kept on pushing me so hard to marry him. They also made me think that it would be disobeying God if I didn’t marry him.)”

It is clearly a false teaching/practice that not accepting a marriage partner presented by UBF system is disobeying God. It is just ridiculous. Samuel Lee also claimed that Jesus did not mind violate human rights to help the Samaritan woman. In Anamgol UBF, sheep is taught to respect his parents and to respect his one to one shepherd as someone who is equal to God. In Kiev, Peter Kim kicks out a sheep when the sheep disagrees with him. Maybe we should make a list of all the theologically questionable UBF teachings and post it here or distribute it via email to our poor brothers/sisters in UBF.
