New UBF building

human12, can you translate this short article about UBF. It seems the UBF chaebol has erected an expensive building in Kwangju for the glory of Lee and Barry, called "Zion world mission center" or something.

This reminds me of a story that a UBF defender (Shepherd M.) told me when I started to become critical about Lee. Shepherd M. had been in Korea to arrange his marriage at that time. There, he was invited to the opening ceremony of a new UBF center. As I understand now, that center was run by one of those who were positive about reform. Ok, the ceremony started, the leader held a short speach and then Samuel Lee who visited Korea at that time was invited to share a few words. What happened? Lee took the microphone and started a long rant about how unspiritual this new building (and thus the leader) was, how it was so expensive and shiny, while in his time, they were so poor with clogged toilets etc. and how everybody should repent and start anew with the old manger spirit etc. That sounded so much as if he was a humble spiritual man, and many people wept and repented (and the leader of that chapter was branded as an unspiritual guy). And in fact shepherd M. told me that story in order to convince me how super-spiritual Lee was, and how his spiritual insight was so much deeper than the superficiality of reformers and other UBF people.

In reality, it shows how clever and dishonest a power monger Lee was. He knew so well to make others feel guilty and create an image of himself as a spiritual superman. In reality, Lee had amassed millions of dollars himself in Chicago. Lee chartered a whole air planes to impress the guests of an UBF conference. When *he* did such things, he did not betray the "poor man's manger spirit". Also, it is not humble to rebuke and shame the chapter leader (and the chapter memebers who probably invested a lot of money and labor in that building) in public if he thought that was a mistake, but first talk to them privatly. They all were in a happy mood, pleased that they had done something for God, and then - bang - their good mood immediately was crushed again. In UBF, you may never be happy and content with what you achieved, but you always need to feel guily and ashamed for not having done enough. Even if you think you have done enough, they will either raise the norm or tell you that your motivation was bad so it is not worth anything.

I will post the translation soon. The building is called "Kwangju-Zion Center". As you mentioned, the construction of such a nice-looking building directly contradicts UBF manger spirit. The building occupies 총면적 6백 평 (1평=3.3058 square meters. so 600x3.3058=1983.48 square meters). It has four stories above ground and one story underground. I am not sure how much it costs to build such a building in Kwangju. I am very interested to know how the construction was financed. The money could have been given to the poor. But the Bible says that the poor are always with us.
23rd-May-2007 01:04 pm (UTC) - The UBF pyramid scheme as "5 loaves and 2 fish" ...
... was the point of Barry's "building dedication" address in Kwangju. All those "5 loaves and 2 fish" came together and formed this multi-million dollar building dedicated to the glory of UBF, says Barry. More likely, it was closer to $5000 per family and $2000 from individuals because a mere 5 loaves and 2 fish would be cause for a UBF rebuke for not offering a sufficiently "respectable" amount (See some related links). What spiritually or mentally healthy Christian leader would link the miracle of the five loaves and two fish to a multi-million dollar building purchase? Ah, what a great "spiritual heritage".
10th-Jun-2007 07:45 am (UTC) - The new mission strategies
human12, maybe you can also summarize what is said in the following presentations:

Business Mission, Internet mission and Senfkorn (front group) mission

These were presented at the 25th anniversary of Bonn UBF. It is revealing that these new strategies were presented only in Korean language and not in German.
