The following quote is taken from a letter posted on the Chicago UBF website on 02/09/08.

"The 2008 USA/Canada membership meeting was held from 6 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. on February 8th at the Chicago center. Dr. James Kim gave an opening message from 1 Peter 2, "A Royal Priesthood and a Holy Nation." 5 new members (Dr. Nathan Walker, David Miller, Rhoel Lomahan, Carmen Tedeski, Richard Choi) were recommended by Dr. John Jun and were approved by all the members."

Does anyone know when UBF started recommending members?
Also, does anyone know how they chose the members?
Based on some of these names, members must have displayed absolute obedience and subservience.

I don't know much about the ubf legal structure, but at one time five years ago, i showed a copy of ubf bylaws to an attorney. she had been involved as a counsel in numerous church disputes, mostly in minority communities. she said that ubf technically consists only of the actual approved members, these people who are appointed at membership meetings. when i was there at ubf, the membership process was never discussed, total secrecy. most people who were very longtime ubfins were not actually members of the legal organization of ubf. they would have no legal standing in the operation of ubf. this helped to make ubf immune to any kind of legal action from anybody else trying to bring a legal action against ubf, such as if samuel lee took all the money from ubf, only a ubf chosen member could bring some kind of legal action. of course none of them ever would. she also said it ubf bylaws were nothing like you would see in a normal and healthy church group. they claim they have changed, it would be very interesting to see how.

You know, this doesn't surprise me - there was always so much kept secret at UBF.

By contrast, I became an official member at my current church right away, after attending a new members class. The process was transparent and honestly welcoming - which stood out only because UBF was so different.

They've been having these annual "membership meetings" for as long as I can remember. Four of these five new "members" I recognize to have spent 20+ years in UBF. Maybe that's a UBF benchmark. If you've been with us for 20 years, we figure you're loyal enough to actually be considered a member.
