a special lecture by the new Koean UBF director
2nd-Apr-2006 08:08 pm
I have found a message written in Korean by the newly elected director of Korean UBF on the Korean UBF website. He is preparing a series of lectures on the Holy Spirit. I was so surprised to find how poor his message is in its quality and interpretation of the Bible. It seems that he was elected not because he has proper spiritual quality to lead but because he is a blind puppet who has decided to devote his life to preserve Samuel Lee’s false theology and UBF power structure. I am posting part of the message in Korean and its translation in English.

Let’s read Acts 1:4,5. “On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: ‘Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptized wit water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’” Ephesians 5:18b says, “Instead, be filled with the Spirit.” Acts 1:8 is what Jesus said last on the earth. After he said this he was ascended into heaven. It is also the key verse of the book of the Acts. What did Jesus say? “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

But Acts 1:8 says “오직.” In other words, there is “only” one way for the disciples to become the witnesses of Jesus. Receiving the baptism of the Holy Spirit is the “only” way. It must have been very shocking to the disciples: “Only!” and “Only!”

I thought the same. But actually, UBF defines and twists what the Holy Spirit actually is, so in the end it doesn't even matter. For a UBFer, the Holy Spirit is like a mood in which you would work hard and obey UBF leaders absolutely. If you have that mood, you are considered to have the Holy Spirit, otherwise you are considered unspiritual.

Human12 is completely right in pointing out that they have no objective Bible study. Nor do they have topic focused Bible studies, particularly they never studied the topic of the Holy Spirit and so they do not even know who the Holy Spirit is, and therefore it does not even matter how they interpret this passage.

In order to understand such passages, you could go back to the original Greek text. At least the leaders of an evangelical mission ministry should be able to read Greek. In my Bible seminary, it is required if you want to have a Master in theology, and even for a Bachelor you need the basics. However, they claim they are "Dr.s" of theology and don't know any Greek or Hebrew. Anyway, even if you cannot read Greek, you can compare various other translations, as Human12 suggested, or you can read and compare good commentaries. Particularly if you think you have a new interpretation, you should check the text more properly. But as Humans12 explained, these tools are not used since UBFers think they know better. In actual fact, they even believe that it doesn't matter, since they do not believe in absolute truth and objectivity.

It is kind of weird. On the one side, they claim that the Bible is so easy that you can simply "go and obey", that they do not need any theological system, since they "simply obey the Bible" and don't want any theological discussions. On the other hand, they believe they can interpret they Bible nearly arbitrarily and everybody is right in doing so. I remember I went to Kaleb Hong after a sermon in which he twisted the Bible text to 180 degrees to mean the opposite. When I was really upset, he only told me: "You know, nobody can claim to interpret the Bible correctly." So he wanted me to simply swallow his interpretaton as one possibility. I was so baffled about this, because all the years before they taught me that the Bible was so easy and non-ambiguous. But I learned that the UBF leaders think the Bible is something they can exploit to manipulate people as they like.
