UBF and 'special' mission
11th-Jun-2006 10:02 pm
The following counseling was featured on the open counseling section of the Korean UBF homepage. One sheep was having trouble with whether or not he/she should continue to say in UBF. The sheep wanted to know if he/she should join other local church and serve God there. The shepherd who wrote the following counseling said that UBF mission is ‘special’ and only small number of those who come to UBF can continue to live with this ‘special’ mission. Special mission? I heard a lot about this ‘special mission’ in UBF too. What is so ‘special’ about UBF mission? I think this ‘special mission’ is nothing but another UBF business-oriented invention that has nothing to do with biblical truth.

“그전에 많은 양들을 쏘잉하고 초청하지만, 결코 특별한 사명을 감당할
만한 리더로 키워지는건 소수에 불과합니다. 이것이 우리 모임의 특징
입니다. 그리고 그 길을 포기할수 밖에없는 사람들은 믿음의 길을 저버
린 것이라는 생각과 또한 알수 없는 정죄감으로 살아가게 되죠..
사명을 버렸다는 말로도 표현되기도 하구요…”

“Even though we recruit many sheep, only small portion of them are raised to become leaders who can continue to carry out special mission. This is a special feature our church. Those who give up this way of life live under the self-condemnation thinking that they have given up life of faith. Some people also say that giving up this way of life is deserting mission…”

It seems that almost all of UBF leaders do not seem to clearly understand what they are talking about when they talk about some fancy words like ‘special mission’, ‘divine discipline’, ‘spiritual order’, ‘humbleness training’, ‘absolute attitude’, and ‘human thinking’ etc.. They only try to appeal to sheep’s conscience with these words that sound ‘spiritual’ and virtuous. But the context or the circumstances where they use these words do not seem to exactly coincide with the common usage of the ideas contained in these words.

Consider, for example, the context where ‘special mission’ is used by the UBF shepherd here. The context is that there is a sheep who wants to know whether he/she should stay in UBF to serve God or he/she should move to other local church to serve God there. Given this context, the UBF shepherd counsels the sheep that only selected small number of recruits are fit to continue to serve UBF ‘special’ mission.

Given the above context, what does the UBF shepherd mean by ‘special’ mission? To understand better what he/she mean by ‘special’ mission, we only have to ask the following question: Does that mean serving God at other local church is not a ‘special’ mission? If the UBF shepherd says no, that means only UBF mission is ‘special’ mission, which will make UBF an outright cult. If the UBF shepherd says yes, then what is so ‘special’ about the so-called UBF 'special' mission?

The UBF shepherd is using the word ‘special’ probably without clearly knowing what it means under given circumstances. Probably he is just reacting to the situation without clear spiritual understanding but only with business mind to maintain the number of committed members in his fellowship. The use of ‘special mission’ by UBF leaders is just a reaction of quick business mind that has nothing to do with God’s mission by painting their crooked business mind with such beautiful phrase as ‘special mission’ to make themselves and their brainwashed sheep feel good about themselves. But the bottom line is that they do not know what they are talking about under given context. They are not fit to counsel anyone because they only have their business in their mind.

Thanks, but most of us do not understand Korean. This is how Babelfish translates it. I don't know whether the original Korean makes more sense...

"Speech it tried to read comming and going well. Speech to give directly and the what kind of to draw select before the God and the selection is share of person oneself. If it thinks that the other which it counts compared to with association from the church shares compared to hits to oneself it comes and goes to the church and it thinks shoes Ang being good to live. And what the shoes Ang life from our meeting which it sees to listen to and from at the time of both only end of the shepherd field with the church to be same willingly and to think and and well! finally it is distant it is different to be felt the thing and and and. When second lieutenant campus mission and missionary life and the devotion which is special and etc. the things reaching with with the skin, that time the passage it will be able to select that it is not many, the because which it sees cyo. It will be like this consequently and plentifully it will ask the like that things in the shepherd field and it will see and the shoes Ang life of Un oneself me it will see and it will be good and to judge, it thinks well!. I don't know whether the original Korean makes more sense...

Recall the format of all UBF messages. Usually they are based on some portion of Bible passge of about 20 verses. UBF messages are about 6 pages long. These 6 pages are mostly used to describe and explain the passage. So everyone will think that UBF messages are based on the Bible and strictly follow the Bible passage. But most people who listen to UBF message do not understand that the key point of these UBF messages that is contradictory to the teachings of the Bible passage is burried somewhere in the 6 pages.

UBF message is like Babelfish translation of Korean into English, which does not make any sense. The Babelfish translation is exactly like UBF messages and UBF counseling. They talk a lot about the Bible. But the key point of their bible teaching and counseling is that UBF is 'special' or 'it is ok to violate human rights'. It is very hard to spot their key point in their messages and counseling because it is burried somewhere in the long boring messages or long counseling or repeated training.

The UBF shepherd who was helping the sheep wrote a long counseling in which he writes about many other issues different from the origianl issue. But the key point of his counseling is that UBF is 'special' and the sheep in doubt of UBF 'special' mission is unworthy of it. So this key point of the UBF counseling is already condemning the conscience of the innocent sheep.

The messages of Kaleb Hong in Heidelberg were *always* 6 pages long, every week. I guess it has set up as a standard by Samuel Lee. Kaleb Hong always tried to follow such standards. We also had to aim at 120 members, another magic number set up by Samuel Lee.

You quoted this: "Those who give up this way of life live under the self-condemnation thinking that they have given up life of faith. Some people also say that giving up this way of life is deserting mission..."

That's right, isn't it? Of course, it is formulated a bit nicer. You should replace "some people" by "UBF leaders." And you should add that the "self-condemnation" is the result of this indoctrination by UBF leaders.

Anyway, what would be more interesting to me is to know the UBF shepherd's position towards these problems. Does he explain that these thoughts of self-condemnation are wrong? Does he agree that it is deserting mission? Or does he clearly deny it? Or does he not give his opinion at all?
12th-Jun-2006 04:52 pm (UTC) - why target everyone for a "special mission"
If this mission was so "special" I wonder why they target people without any discretion? Why not target the potential "leaders" or those who can "handle the special mission"? And why aren't new recruits told about this? UBF wants to pretend it has a special niche in the Christian community, but hides this agenda from any new recruits. This is just not an effective strategy, even if it were true.
12th-Jun-2006 10:57 pm (UTC) - Re: why target everyone for a "special mission"
The other problem with claiming that UBF mission is something "special" is that they recruit everybody on the campus, including people with severe psychological problems or people who are currently in a life crisis or mental crisis (because such people are easy to fish). When they recruit people, they don't tell them that UBF is something "special". They say it is simply a Bible study by a non-confessional ordinary student church. The claim that UBF is something special comes only later when people are already hooked. That's called deceptive recruitment and is one typical sign of cults. I also remember that UBF claimed towards the media that they are an "ordinary" church.
12th-Jun-2006 08:16 pm (UTC) - Proof of Korean Church Problems
The fact that Korea UBF would put such counseling on a public webpage further proves that many Korean churches have a superiority complex. They each think that their church is the only church really serving God's mission. No USA UBF would dare make 'special mission counseling' available for public view. Such statements would be quickly rebuffed. Even Wheaton College would be upset by the counseling. Yet, in Korea, UBF can boldy put such outrageous comments on their public webpage without fear.
