The last Chicago Sunday message
1st-Jul-2006 11:28 am
Somebody made me aware of the latest Chicago UBF message. It contains the following passage:
Look at verse 4a. “A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a miraculous sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah.” Jesus called them wicked and adulterous. Wicked and adulterous people must repent, not ask for a miraculous sign. When they did not repent their obvious sin before God they became spiritually blind, deaf and dumb. Spiritual insight does not originate from great human ability. Spiritual insight comes to those who repent their sins. The problem of wicked and adulterous people is that they don’t repent their sins. They suppress the truth and deny that they are sinning. Proverbs 30:20 says, “This is the way of an adulteress: She eats and wipes her mouth and says, ‘I’ve done nothing wrong.’” This is precisely the attitude of wicked and adulterous people. They claim to be without sin, thinking no one knows their deeds of darkness. However, their sin has tangible and deadly consequences to their own souls and to all of their relationships. ... Though the religious leaders sinned a lot, they came and stood before Jesus as if they were holy. They demanded a miraculous sign as though they were the unique moral and spiritual guardians of the nation. But in truth, they were irrational, extremely wicked and hypocritical. ... When sin is exposed, it is time to repent. Instead, wicked people make excuses, blame others, and seek miraculous signs. They want God to fix their problem miraculously even though they do not confess their sins.
How blind must they be that they cannot refer this passage to themselves, to UBF? Another quote:
These days there are people who want to destroy the work of Jesus. They are instruments of the same devil that attacked Jesus and his work some 2,000 years ago. They are irrational, malicious and wicked. They invent slanderous accusations that plant doubt in young believer’s hearts. They use the internet, mass mailings, and any available means. We must take Jesus’ warning about them seriously. We must be on our guard against their evil influence. ...
This passage seems to refer to the fact that some people in Moscow UBF became critical. Lena Park in her mission report already called it “Satan’s work”. The “mass mailing” may refer to a mail sent to the internal mailing list by one critical member (isn’t an internal mailing list intended for internal discussions?). There had been no “mass mailings” otherwise and none of the UBF critics uses “any available means.” They call UBF’s critics “irrational,” but it is obvious who are the irrational people here.
1st-Jul-2006 05:51 pm (UTC) - UBF abuses the word, Satan
Lena Park in her mission report already called it “Satan’s work”.

UBF and Korean churches in general seem to abuse the meaning of the word, "Satan". UBF seems to think that anything that does not work in favor of UBF business is the work of "Satan". This is not biblical and it is clearly irrational.

In Matthew 18:15-17, Jesus says that if a brother sins against us, we should go and show him his fault. Now here the question could be: what should be the meaning of a brother to be applied to practical cases? Should the meaning of a brother also cover a church leadership? Should a brother also cover a particular church ministry? Well my personal opinion is that a brother should cover everyone including a church leadership and a church ministry.

Next consider the following scenario. Let's say that a group of people believe UBF is sinning. Now they go directly to UBF leadership and show the leadership their fault. Is this a work of "Satan" or is this a work of God? Now if UBF refuses to listen to them by counter-accusing them that they are slandering the servants of God and are trying to destroy "the work of God", should we consider this counter-accusation the work of God or the work of "Satan"?

Jesus says in the passage that we should treat the brother as a pagan or a tax collector when he refuses to listen to the brothers who try to show his fault. In this sense UBF is playing "Satan" by refusing to listen to his brothers who try to show the faults that UBF is committing. By the way a tax collector is full of business mind.

UBF is irrational in calling anyone "Satan" who comes and shows faults that UBF is committing. But I think it is the limitation of "laymen mission work" in which every layman missionary becomes only business-minded without rigorous and sound theological training to handle the word of God correctly.
